Question:

What are the ceramic rods used for in knife sharpening?

I plan on buying a sharpening kit for my knives and on The SOG website there is a Firestarter/Sharperner that looked like getting, and my cousin has it and recomends it. So my question is whats the ceramic rod used for? If theres a diamond sharpening pad what is the ceramic rod needed for?

Answer:

The ceramic rods are used in the same way that traditional steels are used to sharpen other knives and are suitable for sharpening all good quality knives. The ceramic rod will give a finer edge if used regularly. The ceramic steel through use can discolor. Use warm soapy water and a scourer to help keep your ceramic steel clean.
Individually I in finding an India stone for step one then right down to a Black Arkansas adopted with the aid of a translucent Arkansas. The rods are a little bit complicated to keep the right angel (29degrees) . Th get a really sharp facet do not use oil or water in the final two steps. The oil will droop the steel portions and worn off stone and Gall the threshold. When the stone hundreds up with metal smooth the skin with mild oil or mineral spirits. Then back to sharpening
