Smoke alarms work by having a small radioactive source and a detector. The source emits alpha particles that don't travel very far and can be blocked by a piece of paper. So when smoke enters the detector the particles in the smoke block the radiation and BEEP BEEP. So when you put your hat on the detector chances are some dust, dirt, skin flakes or something like that from your hat (if it was a felt hat that would explain a lot) drifted in to the detector and set it off.
