Every few months between 2am - 5am we are awaken to a electrical/fire burning smell. It only last about a minute and then it starts fading. We get up trying to locate it but with it only lasting a minute we can't pin point it. We unplug everything and smell all the electrical outlets and there is nothing. What else should we try?
Check your refrigerator, may be the defrost system malfunctioning. Check your outlets for problems. Smell all appliances when this happens. Check your wiring if it is up to code. Last thing you need is to have a fire
You should try getting an electrician in asap and making sure you have a working smoke alarm (hoping you never have use it). Has there been something that you have been using, or turned on during those times that you noticed it that you have not had on afterwards (central heater set to turn on during those hours or something)? If something has been turned on in each instance that you have noticed the smell then unplug it and get it checked out. Curious, why are you asking this in R S?
Considering the amount of electrical wiring that is running through a house, it is impossible to tell. In fact, it's not even a certainty that it is electrical. The fact that it happens only once every few months makes me think that it is something external - that is, that it is a smell that seeps into the house from outside (either the air or the sewage/plumbing). It could also be the result of occasional moisture causing a short in the wiring somewherebut it would be pretty difficult to discover the location unless there is evidence of moisture damage.
