Question:

What does Insurance claim on damaged carpet cover?

I had roofs leaks in my 2 bedrooms (hurricane related) and filed an insurance claim. they covered replacing the carpet in the 2 bedrooms but NOT replacing the hallway and stairs' carpet because that was not damaged. The carpet is 10+ years old so of course i am replacing it all. I think it should be consider all one item, they say that because there is a 'break' between the room and the hallway, their practice is to only replace the damaged carpet -- though this is not defined in the policy. The new carpet is totally diff color. Has anyone had any experience with this? I have total replacement cost and it is State farm.

i've been surfing more than 4 hours today looking for answer to the same question, and I haven't found a more interesting debate like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.
Unfortunately most insurers will do what State Farm did. It is unfortunate that the new carpet is a different colour. You should have been able to choose the colour. The same applies with roofing. I have seen one side of a roof replaced by insurance. Keep in mind that insurance is meant to bring you back to where you were. But it's a frustrating process and adjusters don't always have time to fully explain. Hope that helps
Total replacement cost is NOT the same thing as matching. I have State Farm, and I pay extra for matching - which also wouldn't likely include hallway carpet, unless it runs from a room WITHOUT a door, like a living room. Go ask your agent if 'matching' is available in your state.
I suggest one to try this internet site where onel can get quotes from different companies: insurecheap.us/?src=2YA... RE :What does Insurance claim on damaged carpet cover? They do not owe to replace all the carpet. They would pay only for the room. Just because the carpet was damaged in one or two rooms does note mean they will pay to re-carpet the whole house. The purpose of insurance is to put you back where you were, Since you had 10yo carpet they owe you 10yo carpet. However, purchasing 10yo carpet is not an option - so they purchase new. Some policies apply depreciation to carpet. If they paid to put new carpet in the non-damaged areas, they are putting you in a better position after the loss than you were in before. And your policy does limit the coverage to the damaged areas. Most like there is language in it that says something like: We insure against direct physical loss to property described in Coverages A and B. The damaged carpet was damaged by a direct physical loss. The hall way carpet was not damaged. There is no direct physical loss. Additionally, your policy has language in it that says they don't owe you an exact decorative match. Here's another way to think about it- you damage your car and the fender and front bumper cover has to be replaced. Do you think they are going to paint your entire car? No. They pay to paint the damaged areas. So- your options are to replaced the damaged areas only and leave the old carpet in the hall. Or, go ahead and take State Farm's money and replace the damaged carpet and pay out of pocket to do the hall as well.
