A CO detector is great to have, but it will not identify the source of the odor. Call the propane provider and ask if they do leak checking.

Clean the duct work or replace it all. Get an air freshener and stick it on the filter. Change the filter if you haven't already.
A slight bend in copper pipe is OK even a kink will not stop the flow ,but make sure that your joints are clean before you try to solder them .
If you've never had propane heat before, it's a tough smell to get used to in your home. I've been in your position before and you don't want to ignore a safety concern, but you also don't want to overreact. Propane gas DOES smell like rotten eggs, and you will smell a little of that every time your heater kicks on but it shouldn't be excessive. It's possible that your heater is just old, dusty and dirty, so perhaps you should have it cleaned and at that time have it checked for any leaks. Until then as long as you don't live in a vacuum you'll be fine.
