What is a back action lock?
Stupid darn firecrackers. Do you know how many horses have been killed or severely injured by panicking from firecrackers and running through fences or trying to jump them? Really makes me mad. Firecrackers should not be set off in areas where there are a lot of horses around. It's ignorance and/or lack of consideration. If your horses are in their stalls, just make sure the top doors are shut and I'd pull the water buckets and feed tubs out. If they're turned out in a field, I'd put halters and lead ropes on, stand with them (obviously holding the leadropes if you're experienced enough to handle frightened horses. I've done this with as many as 3 at a time. Just stood there with them as there were no stalls to put them in) and wait til the fireworks are over. PS The problem with snedzy's answer is this: the fireworks aren't being fired off every day. If they were, then, yes, it would be great desensitization training. Unfortunately it only happens on the 4th of July and New Years' Eve for most people, so the horses never get the chance to get used to it. Of course, if you have firearms you could do some shooting every day nearby, which is a very good idea, actually. You can get blanks and do what the mounted shooting people do to gradually desensitize the horses. It's irritating when people make such ignorant comments proving they have little to no understanding of how horses think. These are the kind of owners who go out to find their horse with a splintered fence board sticking out out their chest. I've seen it far to many times. By the way, some horses will get used to the noise and flashes quickly, and others will not and will risk injury. If all a person has had is quiet QHs, they will assume all horses will be fine. If you've got TBs or Arabs you may not be so lucky.
I and my friend saw such kind of thing.I dont think i saw a meteor or any asteroid.Iam sure that we saw something suspicious. We noticed that it was coming closer to us.It seemed very frightening. We ran off at once and reported this to everyone in our apartment. They all took it lite and said that it must be a hot air balloon or something like that.I live in India and i saw it around 10:30-10:45 PM.May be you must have seen a meteor according to ur description or it may be a comet or something like that
8 or 9 meteors is not unusual in an hour if the skies are clear and you are away from light. However. if they took minutes to cross the sky instead of seconds, you were probably seeing satellites. Really! Many satellites are made from reflective material and you can see them if you are paying attention. The satellites in low earth orbit cross the sky in about 5 or 10 minutes depending on their orbit. The variations in brightness can be caused by the angle of the light hitting them like if someone flashed a mirror in your face that was reflecting the sun.
