In order to be a pilot you'll need a commission. In order to commission you'll need a college degree. You have several ways to earn a commission most of which have been previously discussed. To piggyback on what Joe said, if you join a local ANG or reserve unit, you'll have a much higher shot of getting picked up for UPT through one of their UPT hiring boards. The benefit of this is you'll go to UPT knowing what airframe you'll fly. For example, if the unit you're hired by flies Vipers, you'll attend UPT to fly Vipers. Granted you'll still have to do well in UPT, but you won't have to deal w/ the stress and competition of track select and assignment night. People used to put a drop light next to them to keep them from freezing, actually turning into a block of ice inside. Ford uses a blanket wrap on some batteries. Go to the parts store and look for a battery blanket, don't try using a regular blanket. Not really to keep it from dying but icing inside.
