What os a railroad defect detector and how dose it work?

Recording a conversation of two other people without their knowledge is illegal. Recording your own conversation is, to the best of my belief, legal. If an employer wants to make a recorder contrary to their corporate policy for individuals, that's a different matter. As noted, it was a bit silly to record a conversation, then pull out the recorder. If you're going to be cute, don't be flagrant. Best bet- go see a good tort attorney where you live, since there might be state laws that apply. .. Good luck!!
