Answer:

I am not sure why the concern over the holes. They will be under the smoke detector which should remain in place for quite some time, unless you like to take it down often which would defeat the purpose of having a smoke detector. Should you get a new smoke detector sometime in the future you can still close the holes with filler, possibly reuse the same holes or just add some new holes and install the detector over the old holes. As for alternatives, the heavy double stick mounting tape will do the trick without leaving holes but over time it will essentially dry out and become a real pain to completely remove from your ceiling once you pull off the detector. Putty will work in a pinch but even with the light weight smoke detector + the weight of the battery, the detector will slowly break loose from the putty and you will find yourself picking it up on a routine basis which will be annoying. If you ceiling texture is too bumpy to install properly, try installing the detector somewhere high up on a wall near the ceiling. For a mild texture you should have no problem installing the detector on it.
I wouldn't stick around to find out!!!!
Simple. The motion detectors (old or new made in China) do often suffer from a programing chip failure. I have had this happen to me quite often. Hence, these detectors will simply go on and off for what appears to be no reason at all. Second, issue, the moaning. The expansion and contracting of heating systems (electrical, hot water or steam) themselves will cause this sound. It is also caused by the temperature changes in various construction products- especially if they are new. ie new wood shrinks for almost two weeks in a new environment. Loose framing also creaks. AS for the light My friend was freaked out one night when a bright light entered his room IT turned out to be helicopter (without sound) cruised over his home. The chopper made NO sound but had a bright search light on it. He thought that it was UFO as well. It was perhaps a police chopper just cruising the neighborhood. As you say, you guys live off the road and this is one way in which the police patrol certain areas. No worries here Just the result of some new and old construction / materials parts interacting Along with some chopper spot light. Best Wishes Wayne
