Question:

What is a soft fiber for yarn that can be worn in summer?

I'm looking for a fiber that is both comfortable and not as hotI want to use it to crochet summer garmentsI was thinking cotton, but I'm a big fan of animal fibers.

Answer:

The idea is nice but the way they are planning on doing it is inappropriateWhat if the child has a shabby blanket because it's his favorite and he won't let mom buy a new one no matter how ratty it gets? That family would probably be pretty offended if people started giving them charity based on their observation of a shabby blanketIt would be better to do a drive to have these things available at the center for those that need them, but not distribute based on casual observation because you may easily alienate both people who aren't poor and were mistaken as such, and people who may be but don't like to call attention to itHow would you feel if you were going through a tough time and found out everyone at the daycare center had talked about it behind your back and voted you poor enough for handouts? Good intent, poor execution.
Sounds like they want to do the right thing, but are perhaps not thinking things throughIf they collect donated items, they should have them donated anonymously and picked up anonymouslySend or post a flyer and notifying the parents that there are donated items if anyone needs themYou can't tell a needy family by looking at themIf they make blankets, they should make them for all the kids and those parents that don't want them, can donate them back to the daycare Yes, that one kid with the frayed blankie probably really does like that blankie and won't give it upAnd once I made my kid use a worn down backpack because he insisted on getting one of those cheap ones with the superheros on it.
I think it is nice to do these things- offer them to all the kids in care and than donating the leftovers to a charity organizationIt sounds like their intentions are great but it could certainly offend peopleThe biggest offense is if they are discussing children and using their names in these conversations which breaks the confidentiality issueI agree that it is a nice gesture but could be offensively You should mention the idea of offering all a swap and donating the rest to charityI hope if they make you a blanket, you like the colors:) Good luck.
First, it's great that there are so many wonderful people so willing to give to the less fortunateHowever, it is not the best method for helping othersRecipients of such generosity should have the ability to remain as anonymous as possible (it's a very sensitive subject for many)Anonymity would not be accomplished if everyone sees who gets the blanket that X knitsIt would be possible if everyone donated cash which is then distributed by the director to families who choose to apply for such aid-and the director has to have the discretion to keep her mouth shutIf it comes up again I think you should bring up those issuesOur son entered the public school system this yearWe got a letter a few weeks ago that there's a program where kids who need winter clothes and coats get to go on a bus one day do a distribution center and choose itemsParticipation is completely voluntary and about half the letter was a disclosure that everything is kept anonymous and that it is understood that there are a variety of reasons that people may find themselves in the position to need such help and that they do not ask for any documentation of need but ask that if there's any way people can afford the items on their own they should not apply to allow room for those who are truly needy.
Cotton is the best choice for summerAll animal fibers would be much too warm.
