This is common for all disc pad replacement. You need to compress the piston and it is HARD. Ideally you can use a C-Clamp to compress it, but if you don't have that just use a wrench as a prybar to compress it back into the caliper. If the piston has a slot in it you can use a large screwdriver to screw the piston back into the caliper. You'll also want to remove the cap from the brake master cylinder (where you add fluid) and cover it with a clean rag so the fluid has somewhere to go when you push the piston back in.
First of all V don't panick. Take the cap off the brake fluid resivior and cover it with a clean rag. DO NOT loosen the bleeder valve or you will get air in the system and will have to bleed the brakes. Just more work. Remove the caliper and use a c clamp to push pistons back in gently. Replace the pads and reinstall. You said it was cold there so either borrow a garage or make sure you take breaks to stay warm and don't get in a hurry. Don't forget to replace the cap and top off fluid if needed.
