A boiler is a device that converts water (or other liquids) into vapour (steam in the case of water) or simply increases their temperature. The water so heated is used for central heating and for showers, baths and dish-washing. Boilers are fuelled by coal, coke, wood, oil, gas or electricity. If the boiler is used to produce steam, the steam is usually used to drive piston engines or turbines, or for washing bed linen in commercial laundries. The steam is also used for cooking in food factories. Garages use steam to clean the crease and dirt from car parts. In some parts of the world, the word boiler or old boiler is used to refer to hens that are too old to produce eggs. This means that the hen is fit only to be boiled and eaten.
