Really depends here. If we're talking Connecticut to Massachuetts or Rhode Island, then you're fine. New York and Georgia is clearly not fine. Think of this in terms of hours. First off, can you drive it? If you can't drive there, then forget it right away. Next, think in terms of how much you would want to drive to see them. I would say 3 hours away is about my absolute limit. That makes a 6 hour round trip and is horrible. I think you should be able to make it to this person's place in no more than 2 hours. That is doable. You then have to realize that you have no idea what this person is doing when you aren't there. You have to be extremely comfortable with this. Personally, I don't like long distance relationships. Never worked for me. There will be more issues than a closer relationship. I'd say keep this person around, but not too close. Continue to see other people as you figure out what it is that you want to do.
It would be better to say you insulate the walls. Most of the heat though gets trapped above the ceiling in the roof cavity. If you use vents on the sides of the roof this will reduce the heat in the roof and therefore the house. The sun shines through the windows and if you mean you want to tint the windows to keep the house cool you can take a reading off a kilowatt hour meter that you can install at the db board in a fixed period. If you haven't worked with electricity yet get someone who knows. Then apply your tint and then measure the reading after the same fixed period and making sure you leave the same lights on and you don't bath or wash dishes more often. Then you compare the readings. There should not be a lot of heat generated inside through walls unless they are very thin and get a lot of sun.
I wouldn't trade your current room for one without windows but better artificial light. Try some light reflective materials on the walls such as mirrors and light colored opaque fabric. Natural light does wonders for a high school student's day in that it keeps them in touch with life and allows freer thinking and greater learning ability.
