Hard wired smoke detectors are driven by 120 v AC. Many who do not know what they are doing end up with a tragedy when they work on things they do not understand. Since you are worried about correct wiring and wonder if there is some meter or testing device that can assist you, it is clear to me you really do not know what you are doing. Any testing device or meter you would use probably would not help you understand it either. Given the risk, the potential danger, and your very fundamental understanding, I recommend you get technically trained help.
I personally believe that he wasn't fired specifically for his review. But not that this whole situation had nothing to do with it. They said on the Hotspot that while we may see the staff at Gamespot as the big important guys who are responsible for everything we know about the site (which they really are), the rich CNet guys in suits with all the money only see them as just a bunch of guys who run the site, and that cutting one loose, if it will solve a conflict, is no problem. They have no idea that they are kind of a family, and do almost everything on the site together, and thats why us the viewers are able to be so intimately familiar with their opinions and personalities. So when this Eidos and Kane Lynch situation came up, I think that the higher-ups decided that they would just get rid of him, and save some money and advertiser tension. But I also don't think that's the only reason he got fired. Honestly, if the sole reason was for the firing were the Kane and Lynch review, someone would have just come out and said it out of outrage. But even the rest of the staff at Gamespot is saying that it was a mixture of a bunch of things. I think that there may be something unrelated to KL that we don't know about, and personally, if thats the case, I respect Jeff's privacy and don't want to know about it.
