If the PVC is rated for potable water or NSF certified it can be used for drinking water, but I wouldn't recommend it. I've heard of problems with the smell and taste of water coming out of PVC. It is usually used for irrigation systems and things like that. Also it is not rated for hot water. CPVC is a cheap alternative (pipe, glue, and fittings are pretty inexpensive). NSF certified and it's also rated for hot water. PEX can be used for Hydronic Heating, is also NSF certified, and can be used for hot water. It is also pretty flexible so you dont have to use as many fittings is some cases, eliminating joints. Only thing about PEX is the most reliable fittings for the pipe require special crimp tool and crimp rings. Otherwise its a great material! Lastly, you have Polypipe. They usually come in 100' foot rolls and are made of a black plastic. This stuff comes in utility grade (for irrigation) or NSF certified (for drinking water). It is only rated for cold water though. Largest diameter I've seen for PEX is 1. Same for CPVC. I've seen 1 1/4 polypipe. Good luck!
