How does public safety, and public education relate? States do receive funding for their local police departments. President Clinton created a project called something like 100,000 cops on the street that was supposed to provide funding for an additional 100,000 cops for a period of time. We already have federal funding of local law enforcement through the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant. Local Law Enforcement Block Grants (LLEBG) were federal assistance block grant programs provided by the United States Department of Justice to local governments, which would then use the funds to support public safety or crime prevention efforts. It was part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance office. The LLEBG program was enacted by the 104th Congress on 22 February 1995.[1] Program funding was high initially, reaching $1.2 billion over the first three fiscal years of its existence, and supporting a wide variety of locally initiated programs. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, LLEBG funding was deprecated in favor of counter-terrorism programs such as those funded by the new Department of Homeland Security. Funding declined from $418 in 2001 to $115 million in 2004, and was replaced in 2006 by the Justice Assistance Grant We also need major funding in the Department of Education. All the money we've been throwing into education, and education in the U.S. is still effete, does not mean that education will be improved if completely privatized. With all the grants needed for private schools, it could become more expensive, and the government would then still reserve the right to regulate education, if we're still paying for it. Our educational system needs to be restructured, and the problem is cultural. It is about our lack of intellectual curiosity. It is about our lack of drive, and motivation to want to learn something. Kids go to school to simply get through school, rather than taking pride in the knowledge they attain. It isn't an easy fix by any means.
