Depends on how much ice there is on the road. Studded tires work very well, but good ones are expensive, heavy, and have a lot more rolling resistance than regular tires. If the ice patches are smallish and widely spaced, it is possible to roll through them, just remember not to try braking, turning, or accelerating abruptly while on a slippery surface. Unless the roads are sheer ice everywhere, a studded tire on the front wheel only will get you safely through most situations.
