Question:

which rear axle will work?

i have a ‘71 Plymouth Duster that i want to upgrade the rear end in. i am having a hard time finding an 8 3/4 that will fit it. does anyone know of any axles that are narrow enough for the Duster yet will withstand around 500 horsepower?

Answer:

Some get lucky with stock (maybe not stock to your vehicle but un-modified) axles for a while but any stock 8 3/4 will not hold up to 500hp. Best bet is to have one built (currie, dynatrac, etc.). Or beef up a stocker with at least axles, bearings, carrier, differential, gears, etc Even then, your still iffy on reliability with stock housings, tubes, carrier, etc.
