It doesn't know, you're on your honor to pull up to the correct lane when you approach a toll booth. Correct change lanes are for 2 axle non-commercial vehicles only. If you pull up to a correct change lane and you have more than 2 axles, you can drop in your change and go, but don't be surprised if a state trooper quickly pulls in behind you and you get a nice hefty fine for not paying the correct toll.
