We had two buildings struck and set on fire in a recent storm. Driving around the city (Boston) I never see any lightning rods on smaller buildings.Is it perhaps because people rely on their insurance?

A new battery powered smoke detector is about $6, battery smoke detectors are the most reliable ONLY if the battery is replaced, or in good working order. Use alkaline battery's and replace on every New years day. Put a smoke detector on every floor of the house, the layout design is on the box it comes in. Be safe, your life is at stake, don't gamble with that !
