why did they used to have round barns??
Because there is a greater volume to surface ratio than a rectangular or square barn therefore using fewer materials (more cost efficient) and it gave greater structural stability, they were self supporting (no beams holding up the roof allowing for more interior room remaining free).

They are architecturally interesting. Not everthing is only functional, not everything is only decorative. Most innovative architecture is both. Look around.
Possibly the farmer wanted all his cows facing in toward the center. He could go up in the haymow and throw hay down in one place for the cows to eat. Rectangular barns have several openings in the haymow to thrown down hay, so a round barn would be less walking for him.
