open boat by stephen crane
The Open Boat is a true story - Crane was sent to Cuba as a war correspondent in 1897, and he boarded a vessel named the Commodore. The vessel sank off New Smyrna Beach, Florida in heavy weather, and the survivors made their way to shore in the open boat described. The wreck of the Commodore is in 90 feet of water, fourteen miles out and is currently under an Admiralty salvage claim.
