Smoke detectors in a home are generally hooked up /shared with a lighting circuit. They are not on the switch-leg so they are constantly powered. When you installed the new one you probably didn't reconnect the wires properly. Just go back and check all your connections. It's easy to do. Be careful and good luck. I am assuming that you own your own home as if you are in a commercial building (with conduit installed) you would have a professional electrician do the work.
