The batteries are going! I would suggest either disconnecting until he gets home or just changing out the batteries.
NC has very little snow in comparison, so you basically just need to get some practice driving in it. The good news is that they actually plow the snow in Alaska, as opposed to in NC where they just let it sit there, cancel everything for weeks and eventually get some contraption to scrape it to the side of the road. The bad news is Alaska more than likely will not cancel and delay things as much as NC does when they get snow. As far as snow tires, I've lived in both NC and other MUCH snowier states. They aren't going to help that much unless you are doing some really extensive driving in really bad conditions, like if you were a plow driver or something. Most plow drivers I've known that used they used studded tires. However, the problem with studded snow tires is that if you have a period in winter in which you hardly get any snow and the roads are clear, the tires are quite noisy and the the ride came be a bit more stiff. Its a pain to have to switch between regular and studded tires, so a lot of people simply don't use them, or keep them on a dedicated vehicle that is specifically used during snowy conditions. They are not really widely used by average drivers in even really snowy areas. With that said, seeing utility vehicles in NC using CHAINS on the tires during winter with only an inch of snow on the ground totally cracks me up. Just take it slow, thats the best advice you can get.
