I want to ask the same question as the op.
During the confusion of the fire, someone put a blanket on her when she didn't notice. Later, then Atticus asks Scout who put it on her, Scout answers that she doesn't know who did it and she didn't realize it until Atticus asked her. Jem then realizes and believes that Boo Radley put it on her and he reveals the whole story of the knothole, the presents, and the mended pants to Atticus. Jem begins to realize that it was Boo Radley who put presents in the oak tree and mended Jem's pant when he lost it. Atticus is shown in the book as a wise person who knows almost everything. So the reason he grins to because he realizes that Jem is finally figuring out that Boo Radley isn't a scary, mean person, he really is a nice and caring person. I hope this help.(: I just read this book and wrote an essay. Fan me, so I may be able to help you in the future on the book if you need it.(:
