Question:

05 vw passat axle bolt?

OK im stumped replacing front left CV axle on 2005 passat 1.8 Turbo. auto tranny. okay i got everything off except this enormus allen bolt hold the CV axle on. someone help me ive never seen anything that big! ive looked around an no one has any allen close to that size. someone please specify what size it is? i think 17mm? i dont know. an also where i can purchase one? (preferably NOT vw!) thanks joe!

Answer:

I have not done a Passat yet, but it looks to me like there is only a small bolt threaded into the axle to hold it on. There may also be a large hex recess in the end of the cv joint axle, but I don't think that does anything. I think it is just the small bolt that holds it on. Look at the diagram in this link:
pass the letter on to your insurance company. If the motorbike did not hit you I cannot see how any blame is attached to you.
I almost positive that what your really trying to remove is the nut that hold the axle in place is usually a 22 mm or 24mm I'vee replaced almost a hundred pairs of CV boots and you have to remove the axle to make it easier and there never was an Allen bolt that i removed there are the torx or star headed bolts that bold the axle to the tranny. Since you already have everything else off you'lll need a if you have an air compressor a gun with that 22 or 24 socket or have someone stepping on the brakes while you use a breaker bar or a ratchet with a long handle you could also use a long pipe to fit on the end of your ratchet when your putting all back together make sure you really tighten that axle bolt they usually have a torque setting that your supposed to set at good luck
