Question:

06 Mitsubishi Lancer-Replace Boot or whole CV Axle?

I was told at a shop that i need to replace my right CV Axle due to a boot being torn. My question is should i replace the whole axle or just the boot since the car is less than 5 years can the parts really be that worn out? What is a fair price for an axle replacement? they want $310 is that decent or overpriced?

if the cv joint grease has not leaked all the way out and the joint is not making any noise especially on sharp turns it is ok to replace just the boot. although the labor to replace the boot only is sometimes more than replacing the axle assembly. check the difference between the axle shaft boot and axle shaft replacement if almost the same replace the axle or if it is way expensive just have the boot replaced.
Well as long as the axle is not damaged, and there is still grease just replace the boot. There is a boot you can buy that you do not have to remove the axle to install. 1 is a boot that you screw together and the other you glue. Ether one is good. It comes with everything you need the glue or tiny screws. Replacing the axle is a better idea then the boot, as it comes sealed and ready to install. Around 100-150 at auto-zone.
I never just replace the boot. Once it torn and crap gets in there is it really worth the chance? I would just replace the CV axle if it were me. That price sounds about right if replacing the whole CV axle. You can get the axle with core return form autozone for about 60 bucks. When the boot gets torn, rocks, dirt and grime get in there and can destroy the axle. I think if it were me and mine I would replace the whole assembly. But thats just me.
