Question:

1988 Honda accord battery light on and idoling high annd lights dim and windshield wipers not working?

Does anybody know why this is?

Answer:

It could be your battery is dead and not anymore accepting charge or your alternator is not anymore charging the battery. Look also for some loose connection in the alternator or loose belt. Your windshield wiper could have a different problem. Check the fuse and wires for loose connection. If everything is okay, your wiper motor could be broken. Hope this helps!
It sounds like your alternator is not working. I had a 1991 Ford Escort that did the same thing. I would suggest taking to advance auto parts, or autozone and they can test the battery and alternator for free. Then you will know for sure, but my money is on the alternator. Good luck!
I'd for sure have the battery and alternator tested many places will perform a free test on the charging for you. There should be lots of parts for those cars such as used alternators at the auto wreckers or you can find a U pick auto wreckers and save a few bucks by removing one yourself.A starter and alternator re-builder will probably sell you one cheap but be sure it has a good warranty and you might want to check with the Honda speciality parts stores bec they might sell you a alternator brand new quite cheap. You could use a DC voltage meter and test the battery with the key and engine off , then test the battery again with the engine running , the battery should read a good 12volts with engine off and actually a really good battery or fully charged battery will read more around 13 volts or so.When the engine is running the alternator should be giving out a good 13.7 volts or so but it's best to go by what the service manual alternator output voltage specs indicate.I the voltage isn't at least 13.7 or it's way up around 15 volts the voltage regulator is no good. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way due to the age of that vehicle I'd be over hauling the battery , alternator , starter, engine block ground posts and all of it's grounds one by one using a wire brush , sandpaper , a file etc.Keep in mind that if the charging system connections are rusted or corroded this will cause the whole system to over work , thus the alternator over works , the battery and the starter and you could end up changing the alternator , then battery , then the starter all due to this rust etc.
