Question:

Aluminum canoe-Does anyone know the best way to prep and paint it? What about the wooden paddles?

I just inherited a 15 ft aluminum canoe with wooden paddlesThe paddles are in pretty good shape, just need a little tlcWhat little paint is left on the canoe is faded, and there is none at all left on the bottomWhat is the best and cheapest way to repaint? I am sure I will need to sand and prime first, but no idea what the best products would be.

Answer:

clean it and seal it with clear lacquer.
If it was previously painted, it will need to be repaintedThe aluminum skin was probably not anodized which would have been sufficient corrosion resistanceYou're right to remove all old paint and sand any corrosion areasClean the surface afterwardThe primer should contain a chromate-Zinc chromate or Magnesium chromate, etcAfter the primer is allowed to cure sufficiently, proceed with paintingYou can easily get information on paint recommendations on the net-Tnemec, Sherwin-Williams, etc.
