NOT the heater core, the fittings that connect the hoses to the heater core. Right behind the passenger side head, between the head and the firewall. They look like plastic 90 degree elbow fittings, L shaped. They go onto the end of the pipes for the Heater Core inlet/outlet. They've broken off at the firewall. Thanks

I suggest you only need a temperature sensor eg temperature dependent resistor or a thermocouple ( dissimilar metals) or a bimetallic strip All of these could be used to sense a risein temperature and trigger an alarm or water spray
Smoke from any source can set it off, if there is sufficient quantity of smoke. House fires, burning food, or cigarette/cigar smoke all can potentially set off a smoke detector just depends on how much smoke there is and how sensitive the smoke detector is.
