Smoke detectors has a photo-cell that measures a certain amount of fumes across its sensor. You may not see the smoke or fumes but the photo-cell is very sensitive. If the detector goes off and stays on, you can try resetting the detector, usually by pressing the reset or red button. If your detector is beeping, they you need to change the backup battery. If all else fails, you can always remove the detector from the AC connection until the electricity comes make back on. Most AC detectors are all linked together. If one goes off, they all go off.
