Question:

AWD Tire replacement?

Is it true if one tire needs to be replaced on a awd car, you have to replace all 4 tires? I own a 2017 Subaru forester xt and I pop a tire and dealership saying I need 4 new tires because if the car‘s tires are not the same in like balance, it can damage the car. So do I need 4 new tires or just 1 for the pop tire?

Answer:

Complete BS. The guy is trying to sell you tires you don't need. Just get the new tire balanced. It's a 2017 car FFS. The other 3 tires are almost new,
If you can get the same tire as the one you wrecked, you dont need to get all 4
Subaru recommends all tires be maintained within 1/4 inch rolling circumference of each other. Tire shops often offer shaving services to match the new tire to the existing ones. As rockhopjohn, one of the more experienced people in the Subaru forum in the source, puts it, Will this damage your transmission noticeably right away? No. Will it be something that will greatly shorten the serviceability of your transmission, especially the longer your run them; Yes. If you are under that 2/32nds difference, the wear on your transmission components is minimal, but the more you go over that number, the more quickly you are wearing out those components. So, either pay a little now now, a lot later, or pass the problem on to someone else, those are your choices. Shaving the tire is obviously the cheapest solution, if you can find someone to do that for you. The short of it is that the tread mismatch won't destroy the AWD system in less than 10 miles like it would with the old Volvo system, it still wears it.
