Question:

Bathroom Sink slowly exploding?

I heard a crackling sound inside my bathroom. The next morning, a small section of my sink exploded. Broken sink parts all over the counter. The sink is not plastic and is not clear as glass. The sink material looks gray/black almost like chalk but extremely hard/brittle. Why did this happen? Thanks!

Answer:

Hello. From your description it sounds like you sink is Porcelain. This may happen from time to time due to a small crack or other weakness. To fix it you need porcelain cement (found in any hardware store). Cement the pieces back together and let it dry. Then you're back in business.
Is this a fairly new sink? If it is, then it was probably installed incorrectly. It's probably wedged into its location with no wiggle room for expansion and contraction with temperature. This is what's causing it to fracture. If it's an old sink, then it might have gotten fractured over time, and this is the day for it to disintegrate.
