Ben Franklin's Lightning Conductor Needle-Point Design Observation Question?

Now whenever I search for information on Benjamin Franklin's Lightning Rod, I get the same information over and over. How in the 18th century he invented the needle point lightning rod and observed that a sharp iron needle would conduct eletricity away from a charged metal sphere. What is this metal sphere? Is it in the lightning rod or was it part of some test. I don't quite understand and it might just because iFail.

Answer:

William B is correct for that height.
Make it 40 to the center of the handle of a fire extinguisher cabinet, or 40 to the fire extinguisher wall hook if it's a wall mounted one. Most codes give you a range that the handle has to be within. 37 would work too as others have said. The reason I say 40 is because it's the handicap height for all bathroom hardware. Knobs, cranks, on-buttons, etc in commercial bathrooms, are all usually set at 40 above the floor.
It's not that dangerous if not damp or wet. But after 20 years I'ld trough it away!
The top is to be no more than 5 feet off the floor, and the bottom a minumum 4 inches above it. New York City, and most other Municipalities, require each extinguisher to be certified, inspected, as well as installed no less than 4 inches from the floor, and no greater (in most applications) than 48 inches from the top of the extinguisher. Check your local code, or with your local Fire Department, I GUARANTEE they'll be happy to help.
