I have a 44 year old frame built home; stucco and a asphalt shingle roof with a large attic crawl spacethe heat in the summer sizzles at above 110 most days and in the winter it drops below 40 degrees often at nighti need to have insulation put in the attic area; and am wondering which is best blown in or the fiberglas batts (the Pink Panther advertises!) my budget is a real issue; however, keeping my heat and air condbills down is a major concern.thank you so much for all your help.
The idea behind the insulation is to create a space between exterior and interior wallsWhen you over stuff the bats into it, it looses the desired effectYou loose the air ib the bats that slows down transfer of heat/cold.
ive used both, i favour rolled for two good reasons, when you get a problem with , wireing , you can access it very easy, with blow it all over the place, a real mess, it compacts too much for my likeing , the idea behind insultion, is let air , circlate, with blowen , i cant see this happening i use R19 , if you go to lowes web site they can tell you how many bags you need, one more thing , wood needs to breath, air drys out wood, maken it britter, i would suggest you install a auto fan to help keep the roof space coooler in the summer , less heat up there less heat comeing down to the ceiling less a/c use cash smart lol
Rule of thumb: Never pack insulationThis will reduce the R ValueDepends if you have 2x4 or 2x6 walls you should buy the right thicknessThere are different R Values even in the same thicknessesExample : 2x4 bats comes in R-12 or R-19For the attic, a good R Value is 42I would poly the ceiling and hang drywallHave access to your Attic, and blow cellulose insulation at 14 inches to get your R Value.
Insulation must be continuous and contiguous Meaning no gaps and touching all sides Fiberglass works great when installed properlyIt should not be compressed It might not be the best application for your situationLook to cellulose and foam or foam boardMost batts are odd numbers I have never seen R 12 R11 fits a 2x4 stud wall r19 fits a 2X6 wall good luck
