Question:

Braking system for a toy car?

I have a project where we make a small car about 12 inches long, 6 inches wide. The car is not remote controlled and we need to construct a braking system that will make the car stop at exactly 20 meters. The car will be propelled by a launching pad that pushes it. Any ideas for a braking system that will stop it exactly 20 meters(65feet)?

Answer:

chi is the best and it needs to be ceramic
Have 2 bobbins with the ability to hold 20m of thread, one will freewheel while the other, mounted on an axle, is fixed. With the car fired the 20m of thread unreels from the first bobbin and rolls up on the second --- until the thread end is reached, when the axle will lock. Advantages; simple, Disadvantages; thread winding and snarls. Gearing, that will trip a mouse trap. Arrange the trap so it brakes on the wheels. Advantages; easy to 'reset'. Disadvantages; gearing and trip must be precise.
