Question:

Broken Axle?

I have a 2000 kia Spectra I believe my axle is broken I hear a grinding noise whenever I stop I was told the boot was broken. How much does something like this normally cost I usually get ripped off by the mechanics The car feels like its shaking

Answer:

If you had a broken axel the car would not move. It sounds like a CV joint went out. Not sure of cost probebly 50-100 bucks for part and couple hundred for labor to put it on.
I very much doubt you usually get ripped off by mechanics since most are quite honest, and make a decent living without having to price gouge. Most will give you an estimate, and explain the cost if you ask instead of paying, and then telling all your friends how you got ripped off again. Anyway, if you have a broken axle, your car won't move unless it's on the back of a tow truck, so that isn't your problem. If the boot has deteriorated, you have gotten water and road dirt into the axle housing and may have a bad wheel bearing, or it may be your brakes, hard to say without looking at it. Cost will be the cost of parts needing to be replaced, plus the hourly labor rate multiplied by the hours to do the job, plus tax on parts, plus perhaps a shop fee. Just ask them to call with the estimate and I'm sure they will.
Everywhere the price will vary depending on pay rates of techs. Your best way to figure out the price would be to go to at least 3 different mechanics and get an estimate. Make sure they give free estimates. Some don't do it for free.
