Question:

broken windshield wipers in a 2003 chevy malibu?

a few days ago the windshied wipers on my chevy malibu stopped working. at first they moved a little then stopped totally, can anyone tell me what‘s wrong with them. alos how much would it possibly cost to fix them.

Answer:

check the easy stuff first. wiring connections? is the wiper motor getting power? did it give out all together? might just need to clean contacts on the motor. if yo cannot do these things yourself go to a local shop and see if they can tell you what is wrong. get an estimate. then decide if they or you will fix it. depending on what is wrong it could be a few cents to fix to several dents in your wallet
Spray it down with PB Blaster, and hit it with a dead-blow hammer (rubber mallet). This should break up the 14 years of rust and grime.
You most likely need to replace the windshield wiper transmission assembly. The new part will cost in the neighborhood of $200 dollars. If you have ever worked with hand tools you might want to install this part yourself. It is not a difficult operation and it will save you an hour or more of high labor charges at the dealership. Godd luck with this easy but critical repair. Without looking at your car, I know from experience that this part commonly fails. This is yet another example of quality GM parts, it is little suprise that their comapny is losing billions of dollars. I have sold dozens of these assemblys and folks are getting sick of paying so much money for such a poor quality of even the most basic systems.
I myself have a Chevy Malibu, no wiper issues. Most of the time I see people with wiper issues is because they are too lazy to brush off the snow on the windshield. Instead they use the wipers, not realizing that the pile of snow is VERY heavy. So in turn the gears in the gearbox breaks or the motor gets burned out. If lucky just the linkages popped off. Start by turning the wipers on and listen for the motor, if you hear the motor running then you need a new gearbox. The gearbox and motor may come as an assembly. Check a salvage yard.
