Question:

Can a scooter be used to take a motorcycle DMV test in Los Angeles?

The booklet says any class drivers license can be used to drive a scooter but a police officer told me you have to have a motorcycle license to drive a scooter. The scooter I am looking into buying is a 150cc Roma Motobravo. Thank you for your help!

Answer:

No, you don't need a motorcycle license. The Class C license is a basic driver's license and that covers a motorized scooter. There are also the M class licenses - the M1 covers motorcycles and scooters; and the M2 for scooter, mopeds, motorized bicycle. If you only drive a scooter you can get the M1 or M2. That police officer is incorrect. From the CA DMV website: www.dmv.ca /pubs/cdl_htm/lic_c. With a Basic Class C License: a 2-axle vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or less a 3-axle vehicle weighing 6,000 lbs. or less gross a motorized scooter any housecar 40' or less

Didn't Miranda just say you need a class C, or a M1, or a M2, for scooters? Scooters come in all sizes now, from 49cc up to the Bergman 650 maybe even higher. MOST states classify a scooter as being under a certain cc, usually 50cc. Larger scooters are really just what they call underbone style motorcycles in Europe and Asia. I have never seen a state that defined a scooter as a step thru frame as opposed to engine size.
