Question:

Can electric guitar cables affect the sound?

I bought a new cable for my electric guitar today and im sure it sounds different!?!! is this possible? thanks

Answer:

If you had a really really bad cable before with a lot of capacitance and crummy connections, then yes you would hear something. People like Monster Cable would like you to believe that using special windings and oxygen-free copper make for this amazing transformation in your sound. At the end of the day, the biggest factors that contribute to a cable are the resistance, capacitance, and construction. Capacitance is like a tone control in the cable itself. If your cable has a lot of it, your high frequencies never make it to the amp. Resistance just has to do with how much of the total signal makes it through. This is usually not a big concern unless the connectors are put on poorly. The construction of the cable will determine how microphonic it is. That is, if you move it around can you head that through the amp. There's a company on the net that sells a 10' guitar cable for $1500. Yepand I'm sure that someone has bought it (but this guy also builds a guitar amp in a solid gold chassis for $50,000so I guess the cable is a good buy compared to that). Finally, some time ago someone did a comparison between very high end speaker cables (I'm talking upwards of $4000 for 6 feet). They got a bunch of golden ears in the room. First, they listened to several very expensive speaker cables. Then, they were told that they were going to hear a brand new technology in speaker cable design. Most of the experts said that the new technology was the best they ever heard. And what was it? Two metal coat hangers from the local dry cleaner that had been straightened out and used to connect the amp to the speakers. I've got 3 guitar cables that I bought almost 20 years ago. They sound fine, have held up great, and I only paid $15 each for them. To quote Public Enemy.Don't Believe The Hype. Greetings from Austin, TX Ken
Maybe but I doubt it. The cable manufacturers will claim there is a difference in sound between cables but they have not proved it to me. A better cable will last longer though.
