One switch is old and I want an auto switch in the stairwell. Can i add just one auto switch to the pair of three-way switches? Currently there is a switch on the top and one on the bottom of the stairs. I want the bottom one to have a motion sensor switch.

NO. A 3 way switch is designed to make/break a circuit when either switch in the pair is flipped. BOTH positions are both 'on' and 'off' depending on the position of the other switch. The motion sensor is 'on' or 'off' independently. It can't work with the other half of the 3 way pair.
Yes, you can but you have to get a three-way motion sensor. There are several styles, but I personally don't care for the types they sell at Home Depot or Lowe's. There is a product called the Watt-Stopper. If you go to your local electrical supplier they can sell it to you. The reason that I like it is simple. The chain-store special does not actually function in proper accordance wit the spirit of the law of the code article regarding three way switches. It sort of over-rides the other switch. There is a toggle to switch between on-off-auto, but it makes the other switch on the system obsolete. The type that I like has only a button on the face of it. There are dip switches on the inside that you can access and adjust to set the function you want, but it operates in accordance with Code regarding the use of three-way switching (that you can control the lights in an are whenever you enter that area) and Code regarding the use of Occupancy Sensors (that if you forget to turn the lights out, they go off automatically). Anyway, you set it so that when you walk in, the lights come on, you can walk across the room and turn the lights off at the other switch, and when you walk back in later, the lights come on again. If you walk across the room, and forget to turn the lights off, in a few minutes, the turn off automatically.
