In my house, there are two smoke alarms installed. Both are mounted on the walls and both are drilled in. You can mount smoke detectors on walls.

Although you can mount smoke detectors on walls it's not advised. Problem is there is an area of dead air where the wall meets with the ceiling, takes longer for enough smoke to accumulate to set it off. If you take proper precautions drilling into the ceiling won't be that big of an issue. You're going to be using a 3/16 sized drill and plastic insert so there won't be that much dust. Use a good quality dust mask and place plastic drop cloth on the floor. When done spray dust down with water wrap it up and toss it out.
Yes you can mount on walls but as high up as you can go since smoke rises you want an early detection.
