Question:

Can you put a gyro brake system onto a V-Brake mountain bike?

i have a specialized hardrock sport, and i have V-Brakes. i want to put GYRO brakes on it, the ones that do bar spins, is it possible?cheers.

Answer:

The first answer was totally right and on the ball. I have tried it and its a bad thing to do on a mountaibike. V-brakes are delicate, normal cantilevers or 990 styles are not. The Gyro/Oryg was never intended for newer technolagy. Why not try it old school and have a very long front brake cable so you can twist it once, perhaps twice, and not have a big problem?. Braided cables are better for this setup, and as well you should flood the cable housing with heavy oil to keep a maximum of lubrication. Also only use older wound brake cable housing, the newer stuff is too stiff and brittle. Just one persons opinion.I hope it can help in some way.
Thats a dangerous game you are playing. First, the geometry of the frame is too steep to give you any kind of control if you should try a bar spin. Second, the diameter of the wheels would cause a very high degree of inertia and possibly throw you off the bike. I can give you a host of physics related reasons why it would be ill-advised to do it. That being said, a Gyro is not the brakes, it is a unit that mounts to the headtube to stop the brake cables from getting fouled. Although I imagine it could possibly be accomplished it would take a lot of noodling around. No self respecting shop would do it for you and if they did it would open up a lot of liability WHEN, not IF, you get hurt.
