Question:

Carpet for someone w/alot of pets...?

Does anyone have a good recommendation for carpeting with someone who has a lot of pets? I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and want to get carpet in my home but not sure if it's best to get berber or shag or plush..... sigh, so many carpet choices! I currently have hardwood flooring but I'd prefer carpeting. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:

I don't think you should get carpet. Your pets could leave stains and some messes for you to get out of the carpet. Stay with the hard wood flooring.
I would think you would want something with a low pile. Maybe a industrial grade carpet, made for offices. They are treated for heavy stains and will clean easier. A low pile will help to keep the pet hair easy to vac. ( plus it will help keep the flea and ticks not get a good hold into your carpet) another suggestion would be an area rug that could removed and cleaned .
It's not really wise to have any kind of carpet with pets unless they are house trained and even then with cats they just love to sharpen their claws. If you could sand and refinish the hardwood it may be a lot cheaper. If you insist on carpet, Stainmaster has some very tight weave pile that may be suitable. Check out closeout store options. You may get carpet for as little as 50 cents a square yard and quality at that. Good luck! Thanks for the 2 points!!
Plush carpets are more comfortable but a berber will stand up to heavy traffic and abuse better. The other things you want to consider is color and texture. The more texture, the better it will hide traffic wear. Try to find something with multi color flecks, it will help to hide stains. No matter what carpet you choose pets can cause a lot of damage to it. Especially if they track in dirt and mud or if they pee or vomit on the carpet. Since you already have hardwood floors you might want to buy carpet and have it turned into an area rug. The flooring store where you buy it should be able to arrange for the carpet to be bound ( having a cloth strip stiched around the edges), and get you a protective underlayment to put between the hardwood and the rug. You can have the rug made to any shape and size you want. Since you won't have to pay for installation you save some money, you won't damage your wood floors and it'll be easier to change in the future.
Yuck, stick with hardwood and buy sectional rugs. You have too many animals and they will ruin your carpet. It's always smart for animal freaks to stick with something they can toss out if their animals soil on it 10 times a day.
