Question:

Conversions and Operations problem help?

I need some help with this problem that requires some kind of conversion, any step by step would be much appreciated:A sheet of aluminum foil has a total area of 1.000 ft^2 and a mass of 3.180gWhat is the thickness of the foil in millimeters? (Density of Al 2.699 g/cm^3)

Answer:

density mass/volumevolume is area x thickness(in this particular case) 1 ft^2 X (12in/ft)^2 144 in^2 lets convert that to cm 144 in^2 X (2.54cm/in)^2 929.0304 cm^2 VA X T using the equations from the first line here and subbing in all knowns with the unknown T 2.699g/cm^3 3.180g/(929.0304cm^2X T) we have one equation with one unknown T solve for T 1/(2.699929.0304/3.180) T T 0.00127 cm now convert to milimeters T 0.0127 mm
you really need to cover the entire area or you won't get very good results, I suggest using a piece of pipe or a board to push the insulation into the areas that are too hard to reach if a 6 inch air duct can move enough air to cool or heat over 8,000 cubic feet imagine how much heat will escape or come in through an area even larger
