Nu metal is actually called alternative rock so thats why it doesnt sound like metal but Korn Slipknot and SOiL are all great nu metal/alternative rock bands
In all honesty I think it has a lot to do with the vocals and some of the instrumentation. A lot of the groups that are considered nu-metal tend to have cleaner vocals. By clean I mean they sing a lot more than traditional metal groups. Nu-metal groups with the exception of maybe Slipknot because of Jordison and his tempo usually aren't quite as fast-paced and don't use as much double bass either. Those are really the only things that stick out between them. However as someone mentioned genre grouping is subjective and there is no clear cut answer. I just see Nu-metal as a intermediate between hard rock and metal. The bands typically placed in this category are badass though (i.e. Slipknot, Korn, Disturbed, SOAD).
Simply put the singers in NU-metal bands actually have talent and actually slipknot is also considered an american death metal band and so are a lot of other nu-metal bands
It's just a label the record execs stuck on bands that played rock with turn tables, it's got nothing to do with metal at all, I still think Slipknot is metal though, having a turn table doesn't necessary make you a nu metal band, I don't believe Slipknot is nu metal.
The term nu-metal was, as someone else mentioned, a term conjured up by the media in order to help popularize the sales of metal albums. In reality, nu-metal is (or rather, was) properly known as aggro rock. It does have elements of metal, but that's mixed in with countless other influences, which can include genres like grunge, alternative, hip-hop, punk/hardcore, post-punk/post-hardcore, etc. It's pretty much a cesspool of genres, and metal only makes up a small portion of it. So yes, metal influences do exist within the genre; they are just not dominant.
