If it was a natural gas fire tube hot water boiler, You probably need a powerful fan like a 3 phase, 575 volt motor to blow gas out while it is firing to prevent gas build up and explosion and efficiency of the boiler to keep bills low as possible. Fan is there to purge out the gas before lighting gas to prevent a very big explosion when it starts up.
