If I had to clean your sandals I'd put them in a small trash bag and add a cup of baking soda to the bag. Tie the bag and open it up in a day or two. Baking soda is an odor eliminator and won't hurt the sandals.
They can accumulate dust inside of them which makes them go off more easily. Get some canned air and blow them out thoroughly. They are only supposed to last 8 - 10 years so, if yours are around that age, it may just be time to replace. As far as the batteries, most of them emit a short beep to indicate that they need new batteries. I suppose that would be a cheap fix but I've never heard of the battery causing them to alarm. Also, cooking can sometimes cause them to go off as can steam from taking a hot shower. Sometimes when you first turn your furnace on, they will go off for a short time (not likely in this case, since it's the middle of the winter). Whatever you do, don't just leave the unit with the batteries out. They can and have meant the difference between life and death for so many people.
