Question:

difference between adaptor & charger ?

difference between adaptor charger ?how can i measure the current form the output of an adaptor from the output of charger with a multimeter ?thanks

Answer:

Adaptor is a Device that converts an non acceptable signals( voltage or current) into a acceptable mode. where as charger when battery is connected in proper order it discharge the energy but when connected in reverse order it get charged up If it is an ac adaptor keep the multimeter in dcmode and for the it is dc charger keep the multimeter in dcmode or if it is ac charger keep the multimeter in acmode.
An adapter provides an electrical current at a specified voltage, for example 12 VDC, to an electronic device such as a radio. It's purpose is to replace a battery so that you don't need to keep swapping in new batteries. A charger provides an electrical current that is current-limited to a battery in order to charge it. For example, when charging a battery the current supplied to the battery will be limited to, say, 1 amp. (The battery will charge twice as fast if the current is doubled to 2 amp, but the battery will wear out faster.) So for a battery charger, the voltage isn't limited to the battery voltage. In fact, when disconnected from the battery, the battery charger's voltage will actually be greater than the battery's voltage. Though probably not by much. Battery chargers can be much more complicated than how I just described them. For example, the charger may change its current over time, and end up with a trickle charge just to keep the battery topped off. For many electronic devices, like laptop computers, the adapter and battery charger are built into a single unit. To measure the current of either of these devices, you will need to cut one of the two wires connecting the adapter to its device, or the battery charger to its battery. Then attach one probe of the ammeter to one of the cut ends, and the other probe to the other cut end.
Charger uses to charge battery,it does not require a pure DC source. Its output contains ripple (Ham) .Therefore charger should not be use to supply power source to electronic device. Adaptor has better filter circuit and regulator (many cheap make adaptors only good for use as a charger) that provide stable DC source to replace the battery power. Use a DC current meter that has a range to measure 10 ampere and 1 ampere. Put two probes in series with one of the charger output.(red probe connects to the positive output, other black probe now becomes the positive output). connect black probe to the device accept positive power, connect other negative output from charger to the device where accept negative power. Set meter to measure 10A,if not much reading shows, set meter to measure 1A. Warning: meter fuse burns if you set meter range at 1A to measure output has 10A load. Some cheap current meter without fuse protect shall turn into smoke.
