Question:

Difference between an air filter and a cold air intake?

like do these parts go in the same place? and would the cold air intake be better for my turbo?

Answer:

it is near impossible for me to say. after, more than 30 years working as mechanic,I don't remember how difficut it was then, back in time. today not a big deal. You wiil need a tranny jack.(to make it easy) ps. any question during the process,do not hesitate to ask.
the air filter goes onto the intake, more or less. so they are not the same thing. the air filter cleans the air that is going into the intake.
First off, You can't have cold air intake and turbo. The difference between an OEM (Original equipment Manufacture) intake and a cold air intake is material of piping, filter design, how much dirt can it filter, and the density of air (how cool is the air). Cold air intake is a design consist of an extra length of piping that is stretched to move the filter to a spot that can suck in cooler air. Cold air is good when you are looking to increase horsepower in your mid to upper RPMs, but Some cars don't have the option to upgrade to cold air, but rather short ram intake. Now turbo, on the other hand, does not use the cold air intake design. I consist of: Turbocharger, Turbo Manifold (it replaces Headers), Downpipe, Intercooler, piping for intake side of turbo to intercooler, piping for intercooler to throttle, air filter cone attach to turbo, etc.
An air filter is simply that. It filters the air comming into the engine. A cold air intake is a design of intake that allows air to be drawn from a location that does not take as much heat from the engine compartment. Cold air is more dense, so it holds more oxygen, the more oxygen you have, the more fuel you use to remain stoichiometric, the more fuel you use while remaining balanced at 14.7:1, the more power you can create.
it's not to bad. just make sure that you have dropped the torque converter all the way in by spinning it back and fourth until all the bearings line up. it helps if your family knows how to do it.
